How we work

The Braz Foundation collects donations from corporations and private individuals and lends them to micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries through local microfinance institutions. Once the micro-entrepreneurs have completed their projects and re-pay the loan, the loan amount is relended to another micro-entrepreneur.

The Braz Foundation currently works with a number of microfinance institutions in Thailand, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. We are continuously expanding our reach and searching for new partners to work with.

Braz offers a wide range of projects that individuals and corporations can choose to donate to. The projects range from micro-entrepreneurs in Bangladesh looking to fund a food stand in order to be able to provide for their families, to women savings groups in Northern Thailand aspiring to create a local savings bank that would facilitate a broad range of activities in the local area.

What is Microfinance?

Microfinance is the provision of banking and insurance services to those who have traditionally been excluded from the formal financial system due to lack of banking history, lack of loan collateral or other social, cultural or gender reasons.

Typically microfinance has been divided into micro-credit (provision of micro-loans), micro-savings (saving services for small amounts) and micro-insurance (limited insurance coverage for people in poverty).

Microfinance, especially micro-credit, has it’s roots with the Noble Peace Prize winner and Founder of the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Dr. Muhammad Yunus started the microfinance movement in Bangladesh during the 1970’s.
